A natural site in Turkey, rock formations in Cappadocia were created by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago and eroded to form pillars. Ancient people carved homes into the rock formations; now many of the homes have been transformed into hotels and restaurants.
Arvada West High School social studies teacher John Gallup sits in his classroom in front of a Turkish flag with the image of the country’s first president, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, on it. The flag is often used by Turkish protesters. Gallup was one of four Denver-area teachers to take part in the Turkish Cultural Foundation’s Teacher Study Tour program. As part of the program, Gallup traveled to Turkey and visited numerous historical sites and met with Turkish teachers to learn about the country’s culture and education system.
