How can you make the most of your new timeline for your Facebook Page? Here are 10 tips to get you started on creating a great timeline for your new Facebook Page.

1. Use a cover image for your company that represents your brand. You can personalize with pictures of your staff, customers, logo, etc. And you have 851 wide X 315 pixels long for your Facebook cover image to “brag” about your company. You can also change it whenever you want to highlight your different business services, upcoming or past events, etc. Use your creativity.

What you can’t put on your Facebook Page cover image according to Facebook:

  • Price or purchase information, such as "40% off" or "Download it at our website"
  • Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page's About section
  • References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features
  • Calls to action, such as "Get it now" or "Tell your friends"

2. Your Facebook profile image is currently 180 X 180 pixels and follows you everywhere you post on Facebook but is shrunk to 32 X 32 pixels. For my company, I use my picture because I like to show the personal side of my business. After all, we really do business with people, even if they work for a company. But you can use your logo instead. Again, use your imagination. You’ll see the creativity we used for the graphic we created for Social Buzz Network.

3.  About section. This is now conveniently located right underneath your cover image.  Fill it out completely and use a link for your company. If your company URL is too long, use a URL shortener such as bit.ly or tinyurl. If you are using WordPress, try Pretty Link and personalize it with your company name instead.

4. You now have three places to highlight your most important “apps”  plus you have an additional  “photos app” that is automatically included. Do you have any giveaways or free downloads to grow your email list? Include them here. You have an additional eight or a total of twelve “apps” that you can include. If you have a blog, you can use that as one of your apps and get the SEO benefits of having it on Facebook.  Or add a resource page with useful information for potential and current clients.

5. Use the Timeline Image Tool  to add pictures to your “apps” and get more hits to your different pages. You can use their images, add writing to the picture or upload your own image.

6. Want to change the date of your stories? You can. Just hover over the top right of any of your stories or posts and you’ll see a star and a pencil box next to each other. Click on the pencil and change the date, then your timeline will change. You can’t fast forward the date to the next year, however.

7. When you hover over the top right of any of your stories, you can also either “pin” to the top or add it as a highlight. Your “pinned” posts have a longer life. When you pin your post or story, it will be featured at the top of your feed for seven days. So, if you have a story, video or photo that you want to attract attention to, you can now feature it. Think contests, specials, events, etc., and make sure you include a clickable link.

8. When you hit the “star” you can highlight stories to draw more attention to them on your timeline.  Your post will be the full width of the feed.

9. Add important “milestones” to your timeline such as the date your company started. I just changed my company name from Your Marketing Gal to Kick A Marketing, so I added this as a milestone.  The milestone will stay in chronological order of date, but you can change the date as an admin.

10. Remember it’s not rocket science or surgery. Unless you accidentally misspell the URL or Facebook web address, you can change most things on Facebook. I even changed the name of my page to Kick A Marketing Group recently.
