Calvary Chapel says former pastor left it in fiscal disarray

The post by "Englewood" unfortunately says it all. The worst thing Abeyta did was to turn people from the Lord. He will be held accountable - and subject to a higher standard, for his actions. I would point out however that while you can (and sometimes should) walk away from people (heck sometimes you should run!), we never walk away from Christ.
The church should have had a board, the board and the pastor should have accountability - always. A man called by God is still a man and it's the accountability we instill that helps all of us to walk as we should.
Three years ago, my family walked away from Christianity because of Abeyta, Ed Taylor, and Lighthouse Church (which is a Calvary Chapel in disguise), and I'm so glad we did. We will never be hurt by these people again.
One more point: Abeyta disqualified himself from being in the ministry. He had to hand the church off to someone. I'm guessing the reason Love, Taylor & Geraci were able to ply CCCR out of Abeyta's hands is because Abeyta broke the law by operating without a Board illegally for 3 years. Between that, the back rent ($440K), and the money he took ($200K), Abeyta could have been prosecuted. Others have gone to jail for much less.
May those supporting and financially giving to Abeyta, now, prayerfully consider the facts and the ramifications of enabling Abeyta, again.
Abeyta told me that I had to tell everyone that he handled something well and that I was to tell others that "I trust his leadership completely." He never did handle the situation and by his own actions I'd never trust him again. The fact that he would tell anyone what they should think or say is a huge red flag.
IMO ... he has to have total control. He is extremely talented at spin. If there is an issue he will isolate the person and make sure whatever he does or says can be denied. If he wants a person/s to leave the church he knows how to subtly marginalize them and even get them shunned. People pick up the cues and follow so they can keep their position with him. Watch his reward system ... it works. Imo, he takes note of a person's weakness, such as a need to be noticed, or a need to feel important, or a need to be in the inner circle, etc... then he throws them a bone to buy them, so to speak.
Watch for the tell tale signs that Abeyta hasn't really repented. If he had truly repented, then he'd be spending his time and energy helping to pay back CCCR, making relationships right one at a time, and admitting publicly to the sins he minimized previously, imo. He would not be contacting our kids through Instagram and trying to ply people away from CCCR, nor would he have started another work in this area, nor would he have returned to the ministry ... imo, Abeyta is disqualified from ministry.
When Abeyta says $200K was for normal living expenses ... you've been warned.
When Abeyta says he has proof that he renegotiated the lease agreement of CCCR, and that he didn't leave CCCR with back rent of $440K, then he should produce the paper work so CCCR doesn't have to pay that back unnecessarily. Abeyta says he prayed about it and that he doesn't think it would be pleasing to God to produce that paperwork. Responding like this makes him look like he's lying. A repentant man would produce the paperwork to help the church as an appropriate action of his repentance. A repentant man would admit he left the church finances in disarray without minimizing the damage he caused. A repentant man would get a job and pay the money back to CCCR.
Abeyta owes, I'm guessing, about $90K in taxes on the $200K he used from CCCR. He's taking tithes and $offerings from sacrificial givers in his current church, BFA, to pay for his sins. BFA attenders, you've been warned. That's "Jesus money" which is not supposed to be used to pay for Abeyta's sins or his current high lifestyle, from what it looks like.
I agree with 2Peter, this article doesn't even touch on the spiritual abuse which is far worse than the symptoms of financial abuse and moral failures, that Abeyta minimizes.
Chicago makes an important point as to how and why another CC pastor was able to take control of what is supposed to be a totally independent CC church? I'd like to see that answer, as well. But it in no way diminishes Abeyta's sins, regardless of the answer. CC's don't have membership so that you have no right to see the finances. I'd never give money to a "church" when it just remains in the control of the pastor and the assets are owned by the pastor. Without true accountability, without the congregation having a voice at some level, then you are simply trusting a human being with a deceitful heart to always walk with God and never give in to temptation of being in total control. That's not wise.
Facts are right they just don't say enough. It gets worse than the article. Do not trust this man.
Chicago: Thanks for setting us straight: "what Pastor Brian Abeyta built" you just forgot to say what He then abused! And he's no Pastor.
Get your facts straight.....maybe someone should look into dave love's motives for wanting CCCR..couldn't build his own church so stole what Pastor Brian Abeyta built.
I choose not to comment on Brian's motives but rather he alone knows that his actions were rebuked years ago and done so personally in several meetings. I should well know, having made a sizeable contribution when the church moved from behind the steak house and Brian went all out, spending God's money as though it was his own. My wife's profession is in financial areas and we went to him and told him that we would leave the church if he did not stop his financial irresponsibility which bordered on a child getting his way with pockets lined by the church's, hard- working members. His reaction? Okay, God Bless!! We left. I would never have posted this but forgiveness is not found in lies and he has a greater Judge to face someday.
“I let my guard down,” he [Brian Abeyta] said in a recorded address. “I became self-absorbed, financially irresponsible, bitter, a liar, deceptive, even unforgiving, all within these last few months. And for this, I’m deeply sorry.”
AN IRS COMPLAINT WILL BE FILED AGAINST BRIAN ABEYTA BRIGHT AND EARLY MONDAY MORNING
Brian Abeyta’s self description of being “…financially irresponsible, bitter, a liar, deceptive…” will make it real easy for the IRS to determine that this guy is guilty of inurement and tax fraud. Reality is, this wolf is a business man and he’s playing the “church” for the easy money. This wolf needs to be held accountable by the IRS. I am confident that the IRS will revoke his 501(c)(3) tax exempt status/organizations. This con man should have his next “church” service in prison.
And why wasn't this done sooner? The current pastors of Calvary Chapel don't do a thing about what this guy did for years, but when he starts another church down the street, they go balistic and stand on the roof tops and tell everyone what this guy did. Why didn't they file complaints with the IRS and the DA in your town? Only now you're saying something because this guy is in your hood? Shame on the CC pastors for not protecting the 'church' sooner.
Finally, the truth is coming out. Kudos to Dave Love and Dave Weston for speaking out against a wolf in sheep's clothing while leading an honest, God-driven church.
As for Brian Abeyta, I'd strongly suggest you come clean with your new congregation and see if they're still willing to support you both spiritually and financially now that they know who you really are. Your own words have come back to haunt you and shed light on the sins and lies you failed to hide. I hope this article empowers the people you have misled. I'm convinced that God will guide them toward a fruitful church and a pastor who seeks the Lord's will and not his own self-absorbed, greedy, and corrupt ambitions while sacrificing the well-being of his own congregation. In case you were unaware, that's exactly the opposite of what Jesus Christ did for us. Repent.
