Man faces sentencing for felony menacing

After a jury found an Elbert County man guilty of felony
menacing, the 59-year-old will face his sentencing in April. George
Sumpter was found guilty on Jan. 20 and will be sentenced at 9 a.m.
April 18 for threatening to shoot a civil process server.
On June 27, 2009, Elbert County sheriff’s deputies responded to
a disturbance involving Sumpter and the civil process server, a
retired firefighter. Sumpter had a gun in his front pocket when he
threatened to shoot the victim in the head. The victim’s son, who
was in the car at the time, overheard the threat, said Michelle
Nail, public information officer for the sheriff’s office.
“Both Mr. Sumpter and the victim contacted Elbert County
Communications requesting a deputy,” Nail said. “However, when the
deputy arrived, Mr. Sumpter refused to come out and speak with him.
Ultimately, he did come out, at which time he was arrested.”
Nail said a search warrant for Sumpter’s home revealed two
handguns.
