If it’s Tuesday, get running

Running is a great all-around form of exercise that anyone can add to their workout routine, and as the Colorado summer heats up the beautiful weather caters to both those runners who compete and those who prefer to hit the sidewalks, streets and trails for fun.

Free Yourselves From Machines

There are two types of ways to strength train in the gym.  The first is safe, easy to set up, and self-explanatory.  The second can lead to a greater chance of injury, can take a lot more time to set up, and could require assistance. The first will also get you about half the gains as the second (dependent on your goals of course). I’m talking about machine weight lifting (selectorized) vs. free weights (dumb bells, barbells, kettle bells, etc.), and unless you’re a body builder with a very specific target area or someone whose rehabbing an injury, it’s time to get off the machines.

2013 Fitness Trends for Seniors

With more and more seniors getting fit inside the gym at rehabilitation centers and major advances in technology, plan to see way more electronic fitness resources in 2013. The most advanced rehabilitation centers use “Smart Card” technology. By sliding the card into the small computer monitor, the machine remembers your last workout. The machine’s memory includes personal settings, such as weight, age and gender and also adjusts factors for the speed, resistance and number of reps in physical rehabilitation. The Smart Card system is for exercise planning, recording, feedback and instructions. It also sets up the exercise machines repetition and resistance automatically.

Core Training – What Really Works

When most exercisers think of core training, they think of a few exercises.  Sit ups and crunches first, then maybe planks and “that machine that works your abs.” Why? Well first of all they are the most recognizable, easiest to learn (or to learn incorrectly), and are supposed to give you a six-pack.  Do they actually work? Sure, but how they’re incorporated into a resistance training program makes all the difference.

Functional Training- Reap the Benefits

When people lose the ability to perform everyday tasks, life can become very frustrating. Not being able to get up or down the stairs without discomfort, or rise out of a chair without the help of arms and hands, can limit the quality of life’s experiences. The experience of not being able to do the things that were easy before can create extreme discontent. Limited strength, balance, flexibility and endurance are all problems that limit a person’s physical independence, and therefore can affect his or her quality of life.

Working Out Smarter: Monitoring Your Heart Rate

The majority of people who exercise come into their health club with only one thing on their agendas: cardio.  Usually this involves walk/jogging on the treadmill, riding a stationary bike, using the elliptical, or a combination of multiple machines.  I bet that if you’re someone who works out like this, these are your fitness goals; lose anywhere between 10-30 pounds, “tone up” (particularly in the arms, stomach, and butt), and get healthy.  I say this because these are the goals of about 95% of the people I talk to in health clubs. They key point here is that most people who are exercising are spending hours in the gym with very little takeaway.  If you fall into this category, it’s time to start monitoring your heart rate as a means to make the physiological response to your exercise match your goals.

Mixed Bag Workout: Switch it Up

People who exercise often think that if they walk or run, work with resistance, or participate in cardio training regularly, they are in good shape. Not enough people understand that the most effective way to exercise takes more than burning calories. It is more than moving in one pattern or style. A comprehensive exercise program should include a “mixed bag” workout approach. A mixed bag workout program includes more than one exercise style, no matter how diverse the style is. Since variety in an exercise program is needed to keep the body balanced, a mixed bag workout is a great solution.

Core Exercises Gaining Popularity, Proven Effective

Fitness-conscious men and women have no doubt noticed the growing popularity of core exercises. Core exercises are those that focus on the body's core muscles, or those around the trunk and pelvis. These exercises are a focus of fitness center programs and have even been integrated into the workout regimens of professional athletes in all sports.

The end of summer is near and vacations are winding up. A new school year is starting, work is calling and, for many of us, it is time to get back into the swing of everyday life. During this time of year people often realize that over the summer some of their conditioning has been lost and some unwanted weight has been gained. Since kids are returning to school, the end of summer is a great time to get back into shape and shed the pounds that have crept on over the past few months.

Sneak Some Exercise Into Regular Activities

Many people equate "exercise" with doing a workout video or heading to the gym. This doesn't have to be the case at all. Regular daily activities provide a lot of the exercise a person needs and can be tweaked to provide even more.

Playground Gets Around

What more fun than going to the park?

Having the park come to you, of course.

That’s what South Suburban Parks and Recreation has in mind with its new Kids Fitness Fun Van, a mobile outdoor kids’ entertainment center, equipped with all the playground favorites, as well as two dueling Wii game centers.

South Suburban Deputy Recreation Manager Clay Shuck said the van, which was paid for with donations from the Rotary Club of Littleton, is intended to make fitness fun and help fight childhood obesity.

“We really want this to be an exciting and high-energy experience for the kids,” Shuck said. “It’s all about getting them outside and getting them active.”

The sporty new Nissan van is shrink-wrapped with a colorful SSPR motif and the Rotary Club logo. Loaded with games and toys, hula hoops, scooters and more, it also comes staffed with friendly SSPR employees trained to engage children of all ages in physical activity and increase their overall health and fitness level.

“The activities are really scalable and can fit in a variety of different-sized spaces,” said Shuck. “There are several fitness spots that I like to spread out depending on how much room you have … then get the kids in a group and get them moving and exercising.”

Shuck also said there are plenty of activities suited for individuals, too.

Part of SSPR’s “Kids Living Well” campaign, the van plays a role in the district’s vision to bring activities to children who may not have access to parks or a local recreation center outside of school.

Great for birthday parties, school and church events, the van comes complete with its own power generation system, a tent for shade, and outdoor speakers.

Hourly rental rates are $50 for residents and $55 for non-residents.

South Suburban Parks and Recreation says it strives to enrich the lives of its residents and foster healthy living through stewardship of the environment, parks, trails, and open space by providing a variety of recreational services and programs.

Ahhh, the snow has melted, the hummingbirds have returned, the bears are turning over trash cans and soon you won’t have to drive 20 mph through school zones. We must be approaching summer, which means that children all over Colorado will be freed from the drudgery of being trapped inside classrooms and can retreat to their bedrooms where, for the next two to three months they can play video games, watch television and text incessantly.

"Helicopter" Parents Take All the Fun Out of Youth Sports

A snow-less Rocky Mountain spring providing summer-like weather heralds the early reappearance of two of the most feared creatures that roam our beautiful state – the Colorado black bear prowling through back yards looking for food and “helicopter parents” prowling the sidelines of youth sporting events on a mission to protect their young. In recent years, the latter has proven to be much more dangerous than the former.

Get the most out of a workout

I am often asked, " What is the best time of the day to work out?" The best time to exercise is shortly after a person wakes up. If a person works mostly night-shifts, that time is obviously different from someone who holds a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule. There are several important steps to take before exercising to ensure an optimal workout. When waking up, the first action should be to engage in a minute of deep, slow breathing and a two-minute cat stretch while still in bed. This should be followed by a bathroom visit. Then, it is time for rehydration of the body before engaging in 30 minutes of exercise-like movement.

At the dawn of a new calendar year, many people decide it's time to turn over a new leaf and shed those extra pounds that accumulated over the previous 12 months. Brand new start, brand new year - again

For many of us it is that time of year, again, to renew our vows to change ourselves in some dramatic way. Lose unwanted pounds and get our bodies into shape. We will march purposefully and dutifully into the gym or our local cross-fit or "boot camp" training class that promises to transform our bodies. In the back of our minds there is an inkling of doubt that we will truly succeed since for the last decade or so we have been here before, with great intentions, but poor follow through. The lack of follow through may not be entirely due to laziness or lack of motivation, but rather an insidious onset of pain, fatigue and a growing number of physical complaints.
