Colorado ranks second among states in the eight-state Rocky Mountain region in number of historic sites, approximately 17 percent, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
In Douglas County, there are 16 sites on the list, ranging from religious structures to schools.
“ It is important to note that this list does not necessarily include all historic places in the county, only those sites that were listed on the National Register of Historic places at the time we downloaded the data set,” Chris Jackson said, spokesperson from Colorado College.
The Historical Preservation Chapter of 2009 Colorado College State of the Rockies Report Card examines the National Registry of Historic Places (NRHP) to determine the breakdown of historic sites by location in the Rocky Mountain West.
The NRHP reports that there are approximately 5,800 historical sites in the Rockies, just more than 7 percent of the total number of sites listed nationwide.
In the Rockies region as a whole:
89 percent of historic sites listed on the NRHP are still functioning in some capacity.
71 percent of sites are privately owned, 15 percent are locally owned, 5 percent are state owned, and nine percent are federally owned.
Of the sites, 3,276 were nominated for their relevance to an event in history, 162 related to a historical figure, 2,438 are listed for their design or structural characteristics and 16 are listed for their information potential.
The report also measures the frequency of historic sites in every county in the region by using three factors: number of sites on the NRHP, sites per 1,000 country residents and sites per 1,000 square miles.
The sixth annual Colorado College State of the Rockies Report was released during the State of the Rockies Symposium, held April 5-7 on the Colorado College campus, which examined critical issues facing the eight-state Rocky Mountain region, comprised of Colorado, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
