Gardening grants available for schools, clubs

The Littleton Garden Club, which serves Arapahoe, Douglas and south Jefferson counties, announces its 2010 grants program, which makes several $50 to $500 grants to service organizations in the Littleton area wishing to promote gardening. Included: the beautification of public gardens by a service group or educational horticultural program. All types and ages are encouraged to submit an application.

Among 2009 grants:

Littleton High’s ELA coordinated a neighborhood garden for their families who originally were farmers, along with several IB program students at the Sterne Park Pea Patch gardens.

East Elementary School planted front of school gardens.

Centennial Academy of the Arts students gardened.

Feeding of Many planted fruit trees in a two acre garden.

Rocky Mountain Stroke Association funded an adaptive gardening class for their patients.

The Go Green Girls at Powderhorn Elementary School planned a Go Green project at the school.

Columbine Hills Elementary PTA organized an Earth Day celebration that included planting a low maintenance garden in front of the school.

A Ken Caryl Community Garden was planted.

Grants will be awarded at the April 7 meeting of the Littleton Garden Club at Prince of Peace Church in Littleton. To receive an application form, call or e-mail: Tranga, 303-979-8669, tj@pbmexcavating.com or Jan, 303-978-9000, janr40@msn.com. Deadline for applications: March 27.
