A Chaparral High School graduate has been charged with capital murder after allegedly killing a police officer in Texas.

Brandon Montgomery Daniel, 24, is being held without bond in an Austin, Tex., jail and faces the death penalty after reportedly shooting and killing officer Jaime Padron, who was responding to a Walmart store where Daniel was causing a disturbance April 6, said corporal Anthony Hipolito, public information officer for the Austin Police Department.

Daniel also fired at least one shot at two Walmart employees who tried to assist Padron as he was struggling to apprehend the suspect. No one was injured, but he will likely face additional charges of attempted murder. The Good Samaritans ended up holding Daniel until back-up officers arrived to take him into custody.

A public funeral service for Padron is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, said Hipolito, who personally knew Padron. He declined to comment further on the death of his colleague.

Daniel graduated from Chaparral in 2006 and later studied computer science at Colorado State University. His Facebook page says he has been working as a software engineer at Hewlett Packard.
