Well, just offhand I can see one major problem with this plan. Principals were highly encouraged to rate the vast majority of their staff as "Partially Effective" on this new Dougco only rubric. (So ground breaking and reformist, that some teachers didn't even have the rubric finished for their job description by the end of the year. No matter, rate them on another rubric!) At my school, the majority were rated exactly that way, including numerous excellent teachers, ranging from brand new to decades of experience. Across the district, different principals treated the evaluations in vastly different ways. Some gave deserving employees Effective & Highly Effective ratings, others followed orders and did not. So now some of us will receive lower "raises." They even did their own study, showing that there wasn't inter-rater reliability, but that didn't put a halt to rolling this out prematurely. Insurance premiums are going up for those of us with family coverage, and we most likely will not be getting any help with this, even a "cost of living" increase. I love what I do. As a veteran teacher, I currently have a comparatively decent salary. However, it isn't "market based" when compared to surrounding school districts. The BOE members are tooting their own horns again...don't buy the rhetoric!!!! 7 months ago
The only reason that MORE teachers are not leaving is because of the economy. If they thought they could get a job in another school district, they would leave. Also, colleagues of mine that are interviewing new candidates report that there are not a lot of high quality candidates interviewing for DC's open positions. Jun 17, 2012
Wake Up, Douglas County!!!!!!! Andy Caldwell is one of the absolute BEST teachers that Douglas County High School ever had!!!! Your BOE wants you to believe that we are not losing good teachers, only teachers who "do not want to be accountable" are leaving...this is a travesty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Jun 17, 2012
I also witnessed negotiations and agree that the CFO did not seem knowledgeable about the district's finances. I would like to know how much our BOE is spending on a "Retreat" to decide the fate of teachers, which directly impacts our most precious asset...our children. Jun 9, 2012
